I try to write songs that I want to hear — melodic, intelligent, with some juice and humor. I like to get people singing along, or at least humming in the car after the show. I’m not a teenager, so I don’t sing about falling in love and conquering the world — I’m more likely to write songs about staying in love, learning to fail gracefully, and accepting our overwhelming inconsequentiality. But it’s not as lugubrious as it sounds — I’ve got a light touch and a playful approach. I’ve been performing music since I was a boy soprano in church; I’ve been writing and performing my own songs since the turn of the century: solo, with the trio Laughing Boy, and with pop/rock band The Groove Pops. My music pulls from all my influences: blues, pop, rock, classical, folk, square dance, church, and 1960s AM radio schlock. Since 2008 I’ve been organizing and presenting the Acoustic Showcase — a biweekly presentation of musical talent at a local coffee shop. It’s “live, free, original, and caffeinated,” and also tremendous fun. |
